When most people think of Florida, they picture beaches, palm trees, and theme parks. What they don’t picture is walking through underground caves filled with limestone formations that have been developing for millions of years. Florida Caverns State Park is one of the only places in the state where you can actually do that, which makes it such a fun and unique day trip, especially if you’re based in Tallahassee.

Whether you’re planning a quick afternoon adventure or mapping out a full North Florida weekend, here’s everything you need to know before you go.

Florida Caverns in Marianna

The History Behind Florida Caverns State Park

Before you even step inside the caves, there’s a story behind this park that makes it feel even more special.

Florida Caverns State Park was developed in the 1930s during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. If you’ve visited other historic parks, you’ll recognize that same rustic charm in the buildings, trails, and overall layout.

Their work is still visible today, from the stone structures to the thoughtful way the park blends into its surroundings. The park officially opened in 1942, making it one of Florida’s oldest state parks. It’s one of those places where you can really appreciate both the natural beauty and the history at the same time.

What Makes the Florida Caverns in Marianna Unique

Florida Caverns State Park spans more than 1,300 acres, but the real highlight is hidden underground.

The Florida Caverns in Marianna are the only air-filled caves in Florida’s state park system that are open to the public. That alone makes this experience stand out from just about anything else you’ll find in the state.

Inside the caves, you’ll see formations like stalactites hanging from the ceilings, stalagmites rising from the ground, and flowstone that looks like it’s been draped along the walls. There are also delicate soda straw formations that feel almost too perfect to be natural.

These formations have taken thousands of years to develop, which is why the park is very protective of them. Even a small touch can cause damage over time. It’s one of those moments where you realize how rare and fragile this environment really is.

Walking through the caverns honestly feels like stepping into a completely different world, and it’s not something you expect to find in Florida.

Florida Caverns State Park Guided Tours

One of the most important things to know before visiting is that you cannot explore the caverns on your own. All access is through guided tours, which honestly adds to the experience.

Tours begin at the visitor center and are led by park staff who guide you through the cave system while sharing insight into how everything formed and what you’re seeing along the way. The tour usually lasts around 45 minutes to an hour and includes some of the most impressive areas, including the Cathedral Room.

The experience is considered moderate in terms of activity. There are stairs, uneven surfaces, and a few tighter spaces, so it’s not just a casual walk through. That said, it’s very doable for most people if you come prepared.

The temperature inside the caves stays cool year-round, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea. You’ll also want to wear comfortable shoes with good traction since parts of the path can be slick.

One thing that surprises a lot of people is that you cannot bring backpacks or anything worn on your back into the caves. A small crossbody bag works well if you want to keep your phone or a few essentials with you. Photos are allowed, but you won’t be able to bring in tripods.

Guided tours are offered daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Off-season cavern tickets from Labor Day (September) to Memorial Day (end of May) are offered five days a week, Thursday through Monday, except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Florida Caverns State Park Tour Tickets and Hours

Planning ahead is key here because tours can and do sell out.

Tickets are typically sold on a first-come, first-served basis at the gift shop the day of your visit, although a limited number of reservations may be available online.

As of now, adult tickets are $15 plus tax and children ages 3 to 12 are $8 plus tax. There is also a separate park admission fee, which is $5 per vehicle or $4 if you’re visiting solo.

It is recommended to arrive 30 minutes before your tour time to check in. During this time you can explore the gift shop and small museum located in the visitor center or explore some of the nearby trails.

It’s always a good idea to double check hours before you go, especially if you’re planning around a specific tour time.

Planning Your Visit to Florida Caverns in Marianna

A little bit of planning goes a long way here, especially since cave access is limited to tour times.

You’ll want to keep what you bring simple. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, and a light jacket will make the cave portion much more enjoyable. Since backpacks aren’t allowed, I always recommend bringing a small crossbody bag if you need to carry anything.

There are also a few important rules to be aware of. You won’t be able to bring food or drinks into the caves, and things like strollers and back carriers are not permitted due to the size of some of the passages. The biggest rule is not to touch anything inside the caves. It might feel tempting, but those formations are incredibly delicate.

Once you know what to expect, it’s an easy and really enjoyable experience.

Outdoor Things to Do at Florida Caverns State Park

Even though the caves are the main reason people visit, the rest of the park is just as worth exploring.

There are hiking trails throughout the park that take you through hardwood forests, past sinkholes, and to scenic spots like Blue Hole Spring. It’s a peaceful area where you can slow down for a bit and enjoy being outside.

The Chipola River runs through the park, which makes it a great spot for kayaking, canoeing, or even just relaxing by the water. There are also picnic areas set up throughout the park, so it’s easy to turn your visit into a full day instead of just a quick stop.

If you have the time, I definitely recommend staying longer and exploring beyond the caverns.

Directions to Marianna Florida

Marianna is located in the Florida Panhandle and is an easy drive from several nearby cities, which makes it perfect for a day trip.

From Tallahassee, you’ll take US-90 West toward Marianna, and the drive is about an hour. From Panama City, you’ll head north on FL-77 and then connect to FL-276. If you’re coming from Pensacola, you’ll take I-10 East and exit toward Marianna.

It’s a simple drive, and once you arrive, everything in the park is easy to navigate.

Things to Do in Marianna Florida

If you’re already making the trip, it’s worth spending a little extra time exploring Marianna itself.

The town has a mix of history and small-town charm that makes it feel like a slower pace from everyday life. You can walk around the downtown area, check out local shops, or visit landmarks like the Jackson County Courthouse.

There are also a few historic sites nearby, including the Russell House and the Marianna Civil War Battlefield. After a day at the park, finding a local spot to grab a meal is the perfect way to wrap everything up.
