The Stacks Tallahassee is a colorful new outdoor art destination that gives you another reason to explore the Southside. I have been part of The Stacks from the beginning as a member of the 2026 KCCI Community Catalyst team. Getting to watch it grow from an idea into a finished public art installation has really been a special experience. Now that the murals are complete, I am excited for more people to come out to see them, notice all of the details, and learn about the local stories behind the art.

The Stacks is free to visit, family-friendly, and open year-round. Whether you are looking for a colorful photo spot or searching for free things to do in Tallahassee, this is an easy addition to your list.

As a member of the 2026 KCCI Community Catalyst team, I have been part of The Stacks project from the beginning. As always, all opinions are my own.

The Stacks Tallahassee

What is The Stacks in Tallahassee?

The Stacks is a 2026 KCCI Community Catalyst project created in partnership with SoMo Walls, the City of Tallahassee Community Redevelopment Agency, and Eppes Decorating Center.

The outdoor installation is made up of eight murals painted on stacked shipping containers. Together, the murals celebrate Tallahassee and Leon County through local history, wildlife, culture, creativity, and community.

The containers create a walkable space where you can move between the murals, see the artwork from different angles and get a closer look at the details. Some pieces are bold and playful, while others highlight important local people and stories.

Watching The Stacks Come to Life

Being part of the 2026 KCCI Community Catalyst team gave me a completely different perspective on this project. I have been able to see the planning, conversations, and community partnerships that helped bring The Stacks to life.

Public art can change the way people experience an area. It gives visitors a reason to slow down, walk around, and spend more time in a neighborhood. It can also create more opportunities for people to connect with local artists, businesses, and stories they may not have known before.

That is one of the things I love most about The Stacks. The murals are beautiful, but the project is also about encouraging people to explore the Southside and experience more of the creativity already happening there.

The Murals at The Stacks Tallahassee

Each of the eight murals was designed and painted by a professional artist and has its own meaning and style.

The Stacks Tallahassee - Wings of Continuum by Michael Crowne

Wings of Continuum by Michael Crowne

Michael Crowne’s “Wings of Continuum” is inspired by mockingbirds and the way voices, stories, and resilience are shared over time.

The movement throughout the mural makes it especially interesting to view from different angles. Look closely at the layered shapes and details as you walk past it.

You can find more of Michael’s work on Instagram at @michaelcrowne.

The Stacks Tallahassee - Statua Libertatis by Taylor Shaw

Statua Libertatis by Taylor Shaw

“Statua Libertatis” by Taylor Shaw is a geometric reinterpretation of the Statue of Freedom.

The original Statue of Freedom stands at the top of the United States Capitol, and this mural transforms that familiar figure through Taylor’s bold, modern style.

The Stacks Tallahassee - Wingbeats Daybreak by Sam McCoy and Meghan Mick

Wingbeats Daybreak by Sam McCoy and Meghan Mick

“Wingbeats Daybreak” celebrates North Florida flora and fauna at the beginning of the day.

Created by Sam McCoy and Meghan Mick, the mural captures the colors and movement of local nature at dawn. It is filled with the types of wildlife and natural details that make this part of Florida so special.

Find the artists at @sammccoyart and @reddirtdiscoveries.

The Stacks Tallahassee - Swipe Right on Wild Panther POV by Amanda VanStratum

Swipe Right on Wild Panther POV by Amanda VanStratum

This is probably the mural that will immediately make you reach for your phone.

“Swipe Right on Wild: Panther POV” features a Florida panther in a playful selfie pose. The mural was designed so visitors can step into the scene and become part of the artwork.

It is one of the most interactive photo opportunities at The Stacks, so make sure someone in your group is ready to take your picture.

The Stacks Tallahassee - Wingbeats Twilight by Sam McCoy and Meghan Mick

Wingbeats Twilight by Sam McCoy and Meghan Mick

Sam McCoy and Meghan Mick also created “Wingbeats Twilight,” which shifts the scene from morning to evening.

This mural features a wood stork, fireflies, and cypress wetlands at sunset. The colors feel completely different from “Wingbeats Daybreak,” but the two murals work together to show North Florida nature across the day.

You can find Sam and Meghan at @sammccoyart and @reddirtdiscoveries.

The Stacks Tallahassee - Game on Gator Marsh Maze by Amanda VanStratum

Game on Gator Marsh Maze by Amanda VanStratum

Amanda VanStratum’s second mural brings a completely different energy to The Stacks.

“Game on Gator: Marsh Maze” takes inspiration from Pac-Man and turns Florida wildlife into characters moving through a maze. It is colorful, playful, and filled with small details that are fun to look for.

The Stacks Tallahassee - Tallahassee Legend by Myah Freeman

Tallahassee Legend by Myah Freeman

“Tallahassee Legend” by Myah Freeman honors Mrs. Anita Davis, an important figure in Tallahassee and Leon County history.

Mrs. Davis was the first woman to serve as president of the Tallahassee Branch of the NAACP. She was also the first African American woman elected to the Leon County Board of County Commissioners.

The portrait allows visitors to learn about someone who helped shape our community, while seeing her story celebrated through public art.

The Stacks Tallahassee - King of the Jungle by briteso

King of the Jungle by briteso

Matthew Forrest, who creates art under the name briteso, painted “King of the Jungle.”

The mural features a lion representing the namesake of Leon County. Its bold design and bright colors make it hard to miss as you explore The Stacks.

Taking Photos at The Stacks Tallahassee

The Stacks is easily one of the most Instagrammable places to take photos in Tallahassee.

You can keep it simple with a full photo of your favorite mural or get closer to capture the textures and painted details. The stacked containers also create interesting lines and angles that make the installation feel different depending on where you stand.

“Swipe Right on Wild: Panther POV” is the most obvious interactive photo spot, but it is not the only mural that works well for pictures.

A wide-angle setting can help you fit more of the large murals into the frame. For portraits, try standing a few feet away from the wall instead of directly against it. This allows more of the artwork to remain visible behind you.

Where to Eat, Drink, and Explore Near The Stacks

Here is what I love about The Stacks Tallahassee. You can pull up, take your pictures, and be on your way, but you are standing in one of the most walkable pockets of the city, so it is worth sticking around a while.

SoMo Walls itself has great spots to eat and drink. The Monroe is right there when you are ready for a real meal, and Foxtail Coffee is perfect if you want to sip something while you wander the murals. Lucky Goat is close by too, so you have options whether you are after a full sit-down lunch or just a good iced coffee for your walk. Proof Brewing is right across the way if you would rather grab a beer after you make your way through the containers.

From there, you are just beyond Cascades Park, which is one of my favorite spots in town for a slow walk or an easy afternoon outside. You can pick up the Capital Cascades Trail and stroll toward downtown, where there is even more to see, eat, and do

Do not treat The Stacks as a quick photo and go. Park the car, take your pictures, and let it be the start of a whole afternoon on the Southside and downtown.

The Stacks Tallahassee

Why The Stacks Matters for Tallahassee

It is easy to look at a public art project and only think about how pretty it makes an area. The Stacks Tallahassee does add plenty of color, but projects like this can have a much bigger impact.

Public art encourages people to walk, explore, and spend time in a neighborhood. More visitors can create additional foot traffic for nearby businesses and introduce residents to parts of the city they may not visit regularly.

It also gives professional artists a large, visible space to share their work and tell local stories. The murals at The Stacks are not random designs. They reflect the history, environment, people, and personality of Tallahassee and Leon County.

The Southside is filled with creativity and community pride. The Stacks offers another way to experience it while supporting a larger effort to bring people together through art.

Add The Stacks to Your List of Things to Do in Tallahassee

One of my favorite things about living in Tallahassee is that there is always something new to discover, even after calling this city home for so many years.

The Stacks feels like more than another place to take a picture. It is a celebration of our local artists, history, wildlife, and community, all brought together in a space that everyone can enjoy.

I am incredibly proud to have been part of the 2026 KCCI Community Catalyst team that helped bring this project to life. Seeing people walk through the finished installation, choose their favorite mural, and learn something new about Tallahassee makes all of the work behind it feel worth it.

The next time you are looking for a free local activity, a colorful photo spot, or a reason to spend the afternoon exploring the Southside, make plans to visit The Stacks Tallahassee.
