Halloween Horror Nights is one of the most exciting events Universal Orlando puts on every year, and if you have been thinking about going for the first time, you are in for such a fun night. It is also a lot to take in if you have never done it before. There are ten haunted houses, scare zones throughout the park, themed food, live shows, exclusive merch, and a whole list of ticket options that can get confusing fast. A good Halloween Horror Nights guide makes the planning part feel doable so you can actually enjoy the night when you get there.

Whether you are a horror fan, a casual fall lover, or someone who, like me, does not really watch scary movies but still wants to experience it once, here is everything you need to know before your first Halloween Horror Nights experience.

Halloween Horror Nights Never Go Alone

What to Know About Halloween Horror Nights

Halloween Horror Nights started back in 1991 as a single night event at Universal Studios Florida and has grown into the biggest Halloween event in the country. It is a separately ticketed after hours event at Universal Studios Florida that runs select nights from late August through early November. Once the regular park closes for the day, the whole park shifts over to haunted houses, scare zones, live shows, themed food booths, and an HHN exclusive Tribute Store.

It is also worth knowing up front that this event is not designed for little kids. Universal recommends Halloween Horror Nights for guests ages 13 and up, and costumes and costume masks are not allowed inside the park during the event.

Halloween Horror Nights Guide Dr. Oddfellow

Halloween Horror Nights 2026 Dates and Theme

This year is a big one. Halloween Horror Nights 2026 marks HHN 35, the 35th anniversary of the event, with the theme Infernal Carnival of Nightmares. Universal is going big this year, bringing back two fan favorite icons, Jack the Clown and Dr. Oddfellow, who are teaming up for the first time to shape the whole event.

Halloween Horror Nights 2026 runs on select nights from August 28 through November 1, which is the earliest start date in the event’s history. Halloween itself falls on a Saturday this year, so the closer you get to October 31, the bigger the crowds are going to be. If you have flexibility, the earliest nights in late August and early September tend to be the lightest, and Wednesdays and Thursdays in October are usually calmer than Friday or Saturday nights.

The Halloween Horror Nights 2026 House Lineup

The haunted houses are the main event and what most people show up for. Every year Universal builds ten brand new houses, a mix of big horror IPs and original concepts dreamed up by their in house creative team. As of right now, three of the ten houses have been announced for HHN 35.

Jack and Oddfellow: Chaos and Control is the first house revealed and dives into the origin story of the rivalry between Jack the Clown and Dr. Oddfellow, with the two finally teaming up to drag guests into their twisted Oddverse.

Sinners brings the Ryan Coogler film to Halloween Horror Nights for the first time, approved by Coogler himself, so fans can step right into the world of the movie.

Stranger Things returns to HHN with a brand new house based on the fifth and final season. You walk through Hawkins locations like the Wheeler House, Hawkins National Laboratory, and the MAC Z military base while dodging Demogorgons and trying to survive Vecna one last time.

The other houses get announced throughout the summer, and Universal does a great job of building the suspense with rolling reveals each month leading up to the event.

Halloween Horror Nights Guide Death Eaters Diagon Alley

Halloween Horror Nights Scare Zones and Live Entertainment

The scare zones are the outdoor areas you walk through as you move between houses, and they are absolutely part of the experience. Each one has its own theme, costumed scare actors, fog, lighting, and surprises all over the place. You cannot really avoid them since they are baked into how the park flows during the event, which honestly works in your favor because some of the most fun moments of the night happen in these areas.

One of my favorite non house moments at HHN is seeing the Death Eaters in Diagon Alley. They come out for a small performance and then start roaming the alley, and they are sneaky. If you love Harry Potter, build a stop in Diagon Alley into your night even if you do not normally pause for shows.

Speaking of shows, the live entertainment is something a lot of first timers skip and then regret. They are usually a fun mix of comedy, music, and horror, but the real reason to plan for one is strategy. While everyone else is queued up for houses, you are sitting down, resting your feet, and letting the lines thin out. A 25 minute show in the middle of the night can completely change the pace of your evening.

Your Halloween Horror Nights Guide to Tickets and Add Ons

Any solid Halloween Horror Nights guide has to start with tickets because this is the part of the planning process that can get confusing fast. There are several different ticket options and they each work a little differently, so here is the lay of the land for HHN 35.

Single Night Tickets

The most basic option is a single night Halloween Horror Nights ticket, which gets you into the event on one specific date from event start until park close. Pricing varies by date, with weeknights in late August and early September being the most affordable and Fridays and Saturdays in October being the most expensive.

Multi Night Passes

If you want to come back more than once, Universal offers a Rush of Fear Pass for the early portion of the event and a Frequent Fear Pass that covers more dates throughout the season. Both come in standard and Express versions. The Express versions sell out quickly, so if you know you want one, grab it as soon as they go on sale.

Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass

If there is one thing to splurge on, this is it. The HHN Express Pass lets you skip the regular line one time at every open haunted house and ride. Without it, wait times for popular houses can stretch past two hours, and you may only get through three or four houses in a night. With it, doing all ten houses in a single night is realistic.

The important note here is that the HHN Express Pass is a completely separate purchase from the regular daytime Universal Express Pass. They are not interchangeable, even if you have one for the day side.

R.I.P. Tour

The R.I.P. Tour is the VIP option. You get a guided walking tour with a small group, priority front of line entry to every haunted house, reserved seating for shows, valet parking, and a private dining experience. It is the most expensive way to do HHN, but if you want the easiest night possible, it is hard to beat.

Premium Scream Night

Premium Scream Night is a limited capacity preview event held the night before HHN officially opens and again later in the season. For 2026, the two dates are August 27 and October 19. Capacity is capped, wait times are dramatically shorter, and the ticket includes all you care to enjoy select food and non alcoholic beverages. It is a pricier ticket, but for people who want to experience everything with way fewer crowds, it is a real option.

Scream Early Ticket

The Scream Early add on is the newest way to start your night earlier. With this add on plus your event ticket, you get into Universal Studios Florida after 2 PM and can ride open attractions and access at least three haunted houses starting at 2 PM, hours before the official event begins. This is one of the smartest add ons for first timers who want max house time without paying for Premium Scream Night.

Behind the Screams Unmasking the Horror Tour

If you want to see how it all comes together, the Behind the Screams daytime tour walks you through three or six of the haunted houses with the lights on. No actors, no scares, just a guided look at the sets, props, and storytelling. It is a totally different experience from the night event and pairs really well with a same day HHN ticket.

Universal Hotel Perks During Halloween Horror Nights

An honest Halloween Horror Nights guide is going to push you toward staying on property at a Universal Orlando hotel if you can swing it, because the perks really do change how the night feels. On site hotel guests get a dedicated resort entrance to the event, which can save you real time at the gate, plus complimentary transportation back to the hotel at the end of the night. Some hotels also do themed lobby experiences, specialty HHN cocktails, and late night food options, which makes the wind down after the event feel like part of the experience.

If you are coming from out of town, staying on property is one of the easiest ways to take the friction out of the night.

Halloween Horror Nights Guide

What to Expect at Your First Halloween Horror Nights

What no Halloween Horror Nights guide can fully capture is how much the energy of the event itself shapes the night. The fog, the sound design, the scare actors, the crowd reactions, it all stacks together and turns the whole park into something that feels nothing like a regular Universal day. Even the rides you have done in the daytime feel different when you are riding them at midnight with horror playing on the soundtrack.

As someone who genuinely does not watch horror movies, I went into my first HHN nervous. I was honestly not sure how many houses I would actually get through. What surprised me is that the houses lean more theatrical than psychological. There are jump scares, sure, but the houses are also full of incredible set design, costuming, and storytelling. I ended up doing several of them, having a great time, and finishing the night so glad I had pushed myself to try it.

A few good things to keep in mind going in: the scare actors are not allowed to touch you, they will react to your reactions, and the crowd around you will be screaming and laughing too, which honestly helps. If you are going with people who have different fear tolerances, talk about it before you get in line. Nobody should be peer pressured into a house they really do not want to do.

Halloween Horror Nights Guide Halloween Horror Nights Food Walking Taco

Halloween Horror Nights Food and the Tribute Store

The food at Halloween Horror Nights is one of the most underrated parts of the night. Universal does a great job of building specialty menus for the event with themed snacks, drinks, and full plates that you can only get during HHN. The Twisted Tater, a giant spiral cut fried potato on a stick, is the iconic snack and worth trying once. Loaded fries, themed cocktails, and seasonal sweets pop up at booths all over the park.

Eat early. Food lines get long once the night really gets going, and most of the booths close before the event ends. If you can grab dinner before the event opens or right when you walk in, you will save yourself a ton of time later.

The HHN Tribute Store is the other don’t miss stop. Every year it gets fully themed to the event, with multiple rooms that feel like walk through experiences in their own right, plus exclusive merch you cannot get anywhere else. Even if you are not planning to buy anything, walking through is part of the fun.

Rides Open During Halloween Horror Nights

Most people focus on the houses, but a small group of regular Universal attractions stay open during HHN. With Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit now closed, the open rides for HHN 35 are Revenge of the Mummy, Men in Black Alien Attack, Transformers The Ride 3D, and Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.

Riding these at night with the HHN soundtrack and lighting is a whole different experience. Keep in mind that Gringotts and Transformers typically close before the rest of the event ends due to local noise rules, so if you want to ride those, do it earlier in your night. The other rides usually stay open until park close, and wait times late in the night often drop to almost nothing while everyone else is in food and house lines.

First Timer Halloween Horror Nights Tips

These are the small things any good Halloween Horror Nights guide should cover because they shape how the night feels once you are inside the gates. The houses and ticket strategy get most of the attention when people are planning, but the practical stuff is what separates a smooth night from a stressful one. None of these tips are complicated, but they are easy to forget if nobody mentions them, and you will thank yourself for thinking through them before you go.

Arrive Early

The official event start time is usually 6:30 PM, but the gates often open earlier and lines build up before then. If you are not using Scream Early or a daytime ticket, plan to be at the gate by 5:45 PM at the latest, and on a busy night in October, even earlier. Getting in those first thirty minutes is the difference between hitting two extra houses and missing them.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

While many guests like to dress up for Halloween Horror Nights, it’s essential to prioritize comfort. You will be on your feet for hours. Skip the cute boots and any heels and go with cushioned sneakers you have already broken in. Wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be doing a lot of walking, and consider the weather conditions.

Pack Light and Use a Lanyard

A lanyard for your tickets, ID, and a card is honestly all you need. It speeds you through security, you do not have to find a locker before every ride, and you are not lugging anything heavy from house to house. If you want something a little more, a small crossbody bag works too.

Bring a Portable Phone Charger

You will be using the Universal app all night to check wait times, plus taking photos and texting your group. A small portable charger lives in my bag during any park day and it absolutely earns its spot at HHN.

Pack a Poncho

Florida in the fall still gets rain, and the event runs rain or shine. A simple poncho takes up zero space and saves your whole night if a storm rolls through. I prefer a poncho over a rain jacket for HHN since it covers more of you and is easier to peel off when the rain stops. The scare actors usually pull back during heavy rain, so a quick storm can actually time well as a snack or show break.

Hydrate

It is still Florida even at night, and you will be packed into scare zones and house queues shoulder to shoulder. Keep water on you, and if you are drinking the specialty cocktails, alternate with water. Passing out in a haunted house line is not the spooky moment you want.

Use the Universal App All Night

Download the Universal Orlando Resort app before you go and keep it open during the event. It shows live wait times for every house and ride, show schedules, and the park map. If a house you really want suddenly drops to a thirty minute wait, that is your cue to go. Flexibility is a huge part of getting more houses done in one night.

Have a Meeting Spot If You Are in a Group

Cell service in the park can get spotty when crowds peak, so agree on a meeting spot before you split up or in case you get separated. Pick something easy to find, like the front of a specific shop or a recognizable scare zone entrance.
