Florida Caverns in Marianna

History of the Florida Caverns in Marianna

The park has historical significance, dating back to its development during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal initiative. During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a pivotal role in developing the park. The CCC’s legacy is evident in the rustic stone buildings, campgrounds, and trails that remain a testament to their hard work and dedication.

In 1942, Florida Caverns State Park was officially established, making it one of Florida’s oldest state parks. The CCC, under the supervision of the National Park Service, worked tirelessly to develop trails, construct visitor facilities, and ensure safe access to the caverns without compromising their natural integrity.

Discovering the Florida Caverns in Marianna

Florida Caverns State Park spans over 1,300 acres and is renowned for its impressive cave systems. In fact, the Florida Caverns in Marianna hold the distinction of being the only Florida state park with dry, air-filled caves accessible to the public. These caves feature intricate formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones, offering a glimpse into the geological history of the region. Guided cave tours provide fascinating insights into these natural wonders, making it a highlight of any visit to the park.

Florida Caverns in Marianna

Millions of years of erosion carved a network of caverns adorned with rock formations that decorate cave walls and ceilings. Stalactites, those icicle-like formations hanging from the ceiling, and stalagmites, their counterparts rising from the cave floor, create a captivating spectacle. Flowstone drapes the cave walls like a natural tapestry, while delicate soda straws add a touch of whimsy.

Planning Your Visit to Florida Caverns in Marianna

Before heading to Florida Caverns State Park, consider these tips for a smooth and enjoyable experience:

  • Hours of Operation: Check the park’s official website or call ahead to confirm opening hours and tour availability.
  • Admission Fee: Admission to the Florida Caverns State Park is $5 per vehicle (two to eight people)/$4 for a single occupant vehicle. The costs of the guided tours are in addition to the admission fee.
  • Reservations: While tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis, making reservations in advance, especially during peak seasons, is recommended to secure your spot.
  • What to Bring: Pack essentials such as comfortable walking shoes with good traction (the cave floors can be slippery) and a lightweight jacket. Do not bring a backpack or large purse as you won’t be able to bring it with you (nothing allowed on your back), I recommend a crossbody for any essentials you would like to have with you.
  • Follow the Rules: It is important not to touch anything in the caves. Do not sit, stand, climb, or kick anything as the chemicals on our hands and skin will destroy the delicate formations. No food, drinks, gum, or candy is allowed. Also, no tobacco products or electric cigarettes. You are not able to bring strollers or infant back carriers due to some of the small passages. Photos are allowed but you cannot bring tripods or monopods.
