Jump to RecipeA Brief History of Milkshakes
Milkshakes have a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. Originally, the term “milkshake” referred to an alcoholic beverage made with eggs and whiskey. However, by the early 1900s, the term evolved to describe a non-alcoholic drink made with milk, ice cream, and flavorings. The invention of the electric blender in the 1920s revolutionized milkshake making, making it even easier to achieve the smooth and creamy texture we love today.
The 1950s saw the rise of diners and soda fountains, where milkshakes became a popular menu item. Vanilla milkshakes, in particular, gained widespread popularity due to their classic flavor that pairs well with a variety of foods. Today, milkshakes are enjoyed worldwide in various forms, but the thick and creamy vanilla milkshake remains a staple.

Tips for the Perfect Vanilla Milkshakes
Creating perfect vanilla milkshakes is an art that combines the right ingredients and techniques. To help you achieve milkshake perfection, we’ve compiled a list of essential tips. From selecting high-quality ingredients to mastering the blending process, these tips will ensure your milkshake is always thick, creamy, and irresistibly delicious.
The Perfect Ratio
Getting the ratio of ice cream to milk just right is crucial for achieving the ideal thickness. A common rule of thumb is to use about 3 cups of ice cream to 1 cup of milk. This ratio creates a thick milkshake that you can sip through a straw but is still creamy and smooth. If you prefer a thicker milkshake, reduce the amount of milk slightly. Alternatively, if you would like a thinner milkshake, add a little more milk.
Use High-Quality Ingredients
The quality of your ingredients directly impacts the taste of your milkshake. Choose a premium vanilla ice cream and pure vanilla extract for the best flavor. If possible, use whole milk for the creamiest texture.
Chill Your Glass
For an extra cold milkshake, chill your glass in the freezer for about 10 minutes before serving. This helps keep your milkshake cold longer and enhances the overall experience.
Don’t Overblend
Blend your milkshake just until smooth. Overblending can cause the milkshake to become too thin and lose its creamy texture.
Serve Immediately
Milkshakes are best enjoyed fresh. Serve your milkshake as soon as it’s blended to enjoy its thick and creamy consistency.

Variations of Vanilla Milkshakes
- Vanilla Bean Milkshake: For a more intense vanilla flavor, use vanilla bean ice cream. This variation provides a rich, aromatic taste and a speckled appearance.
- Vanilla Oreo Milkshake: Blend a few Oreo cookies for a deliciously crunchy and chocolatey twist. This variation adds texture and a fun contrast to the smooth vanilla base.
- Strawberries and Cream Milkshake: Add a handful of fresh or frozen strawberries to the blender for a fruity and refreshing version of the classic vanilla milkshake. This is a great way to enjoy a summer treat with a burst of natural sweetness.
- Caramel Vanilla Milkshake: Swirl in some caramel sauce for a rich and indulgent milkshake. The combination of caramel and vanilla creates a decadent flavor that’s hard to resist.
- Vanilla Coffee Milkshake: Blend in a shot of espresso or some brewed coffee for a caffeinated twist. This variation is perfect for coffee lovers and makes for a great pick-me-up treat.

Healthier Vanilla Milkshake Alternatives
If you’re looking for a lighter version of a vanilla milkshake, there are plenty of ways to make a healthier alternative without sacrificing taste.
Use Frozen Yogurt or Low-Fat Ice Cream
Instead of traditional ice cream, use frozen yogurt or low-fat ice cream to reduce the calorie and fat content. These alternatives still provide a creamy texture and delicious flavor.
Choose Non-Dairy Options
For those who are lactose intolerant or prefer a vegan option, use non-dairy ice cream and milk. There are many delicious non-dairy ice creams available made from almond, coconut, or soy milk. Pair this with almond, oat, or soy milk for a dairy-free treat.
Add Fresh Fruit
Incorporate fresh fruit like bananas, berries, or peaches into your milkshake for added vitamins and natural sweetness. Fruit not only enhances the flavor but also boosts the nutritional value of your milkshake.
