Our trip was hosted by Visit Amelia Island, but all opinions are my own.

Where is Amelia Island?

Amelia Island is part of the Sea Islands chain, located in the northeastern corner of Florida, near the Georgia border. It’s about 30 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida. It is best known for its 13 miles of beautiful beaches, preserved historic landmarks, and welcoming small-town atmosphere.

The island’s main town, Fernandina Beach, is full of personality with its brick-lined streets, Victorian architecture, and vibrant food scene. Amelia Island feels quieter and more refined than many Florida beach destinations, which is exactly why couples love it. It offers that coastal escape feeling without the chaos.

How to Get to Amelia Island

Traveling to Amelia Island is easy and straightforward, whether you’re flying in or driving from elsewhere in Florida or the Southeast.

Amelia Island is conveniently located near Jacksonville, Florida. The closest major airport is Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), situated about 30 miles southwest of the island. From the airport, renting a car is the most convenient option and allows you to explore Amelia Island at your own pace. The drive itself is part of the experience, with scenic views of marshlands and waterways as you approach the island.

If you’re driving, Amelia Island is easily accessible via I-95. From I-95, take Exit 373 for Florida A1A/State Road 200 and follow the signs to Amelia Island.

Visitors arriving by boat can dock at Fernandina Harbor Marina, which is conveniently located near downtown Fernandina Beach and within walking distance of shops and restaurants.

Amelia Island Vacation Tips

A little planning makes a big difference when it comes to enjoying a smooth and stress-free Amelia Island vacation.

  • Accommodations: Amelia Island offers a diverse range of accommodations, from luxurious beachfront resorts and charming bed and breakfasts to cozy vacation rentals. Consider your budget and desired location when making your choice.
  • Getting Around: Having a car is convenient for exploring freely, but Amelia Island is relatively walkable in certain areas, like the historic Fernandina Beach downtown area. You can also rent bicycles for a more eco-friendly way to navigate the island’s scenic trails.
  • What to Pack: Bring comfortable clothing, swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent. If you plan on dining at some of the more upscale restaurants, pack a few dressier outfits.
  • Build in Downtime: An Amelia Island vacation is not meant to be rushed. Leaving space in your itinerary allows you to fully enjoy the slower pace and savor the little moments together.

Amelia Island Vacation: 3-Day Itinerary

This Amelia Island vacation itinerary is designed for couples who want a balanced mix of exploration, relaxation, and memorable experiences. Each day flows naturally so you never feel rushed or overbooked.

Day 1: Discovering Historic Fernandina Beach

Arrive on Amelia Island and check into your accommodations. For a romantic getaway, consider staying at one of the Amelia Island bed and breakfast options or a beachfront resort. Take a little time to settle in, freshen up, and switch into vacation mode before heading out to explore.

Start your Amelia Island vacation by grabbing lunch at one of the many delicious restaurants in downtown Fernandina Beach. Timoti’s Seafood Shak is a great option for casual dining and some of the best seafood.

Explore Centre Street, the heart of the historic district, which is lined with colorful buildings, local boutiques, and inviting restaurants. There are so many options to choose from! Pop into art galleries, browse locally owned shops, and take your time exploring. If you enjoy history, the Amelia Island Museum of History is a worthwhile stop and gives helpful context about the island’s past.

Amelia Island Vacation Sunset Amelia River Cruise

As evening approaches, head out for a sunset cruise with Amelia River Cruises. This is one of the most romantic ways to experience Amelia Island. The calm water, golden light, and frequent dolphin sightings make it a memorable start to your trip. Depending on the route, you may even spot the wild horses that live on nearby Cumberland Island.

Amelia Island Vacation Wicked Bao

Enjoy a fun dinner at Wicked Bao, savoring the best Asian street food you can find. If the owner, Nathalie, is there you’ll be greeted with the biggest smile and suggestions for all of the most popular dishes. The menu is perfect for sharing dishes and trying something new together.

If you’re looking for a sweet treat to end the night, grab ice cream at Island Time Ice Cream before heading back to your room for a restful night’s sleep.

Day 2: Adventure and Relaxation

Start your day with a morning at the beach for some relaxation. Amelia Island’s beaches are known for their soft white sand and tranquil atmosphere. Whether you prefer sunbathing, shell hunting, or simply sitting together listening to the waves, this quiet start sets the tone for the day.

For lunch, pack a picnic and enjoy it on the beach. Many local delis and markets offer gourmet picnic options, perfect for a relaxed meal. A beach picnic is one of those simple moments that make an Amelia Island vacation feel extra romantic.

Spend the afternoon unwinding at a local spa. The Ritz-Carlton Spa is especially popular for couples and offers a range of treatments designed to help you fully relax and recharge together.

Amelia Island Vacation David's Romantic Dinner

In the evening, dress up for dinner at David’s Restaurant & Lounge. Known for its intimate setting and gourmet cuisine, it is a favorite for special occasions and one of the top dining experiences on the island.

Day 3: Exploring Nature and Local Culture

On your final day, head to Fort Clinch State Park. This area beautifully combines history and nature. Walk through the well-preserved 19th-century fort, explore the trails, or bike along the scenic paths while taking in views of Cumberland Sound.
