This local favorite is one of the best things to do with kids in Tallahassee, but honestly it is just as fun for adults too. The Tallahassee Museum blends Florida history, native wildlife, and nature trails across a beautiful wooded property. It is the kind of place where you can spend an entire afternoon exploring and still feel like you only scratched the surface.

From historic buildings and animal exhibits to the thrilling Tallahassee Museum zip line course, there is something here for just about everyone.

One important thing to know before you go. Despite the name, the Tallahassee Museum is not your typical indoor museum. Most of the experience takes place outside on boardwalks and trails that wind through the property.

About the Tallahassee Museum

Set on 52 acres of forest and wetlands, the Tallahassee Museum focuses on Florida’s natural environment and cultural history. As you explore the grounds you will find wildlife habitats, historic buildings, scenic trails, and interactive exhibits that help bring the region’s story to life.

It is important to note that the Tallahassee Museum is a mostly outdoor attraction and not like a typical “museum.” The museum is designed to feel immersive and connected to the environment around it. Elevated boardwalks guide you through wooded areas and around animal habitats, making it easy to explore while staying close to nature.

It is one of those places that always reminds me how much natural beauty we have right here in Tallahassee.

How to Get to the Tallahassee Museum

The Tallahassee Museum is located at:

3945 Museum Drive
Tallahassee, FL

It sits just off Capital Circle Southwest near the Tallahassee airport, making it easy to reach whether you are visiting from across town or coming in from out of the area.

Free parking is available on site.

Tallahassee Museum Tickets and Hours

The Tallahassee Museum is open year round with seasonal closures on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

Hours
Monday through Saturday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Sunday: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Museum hours are 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Saturday and 11:00 am – 5:00 pm on Sundays. Free parking is available in the museum parking lot.

General Admission

Adults: $17.50
Seniors and college students: $16.50
Children ages 4 to 15: $15
Children 3 and under: Free

Memberships are also available and can be a great option if you plan to visit several times throughout the year.

Tree to Tree Adventure

Treemendous Adventures (children 41” to 60” tall): $25

Canopy Crossing (at least 54″ tall): $50

Soaring Cypress (at least 54” tall): $60

Combo tickets that include the Tree to Tree Adventures are also available. Treemendous Adventures + Museum admission is $30, Canopy Crossing + Museum admission is $60, and Soaring Cypress + Museum admission is $70.

What to See and Do at the Tallahassee Museum

There are so many different experiences packed into the Tallahassee Museum that it is easy to turn a simple visit into a full day of exploring.

Step Back in Time With Historical Exhibits

One of the most interesting parts of the museum is the collection of historic buildings and recreated settings that tell the story of Florida’s past.

You can walk through preserved cabins and homesteads that represent life for early settlers in the region. These spaces help bring history to life in a way that feels much more immersive than reading about it in a book.

The Living History Farm is another highlight. This recreated 1880s farmstead is home to animals like cows, pigs, chickens, and horses. Visitors can learn about how farms operated during that time and sometimes even help with feeding demonstrations.

It is especially fun for kids who love animals and hands on learning.

Wildlife Encounters Along the Boardwalk

The Tallahassee Museum is also home to many animals that are native to the Southeast. As you follow the elevated boardwalk through the wildlife area, you will see animals in natural style habitats surrounded by forest.

Some of the animals you may spot include Florida panthers, red wolves, black bears, river otters, and birds of prey.

One thing I always appreciate is the museum’s focus on conservation. Many of the animals here were raised in captivity or have injuries that prevent them from surviving in the wild. The museum provides a safe place for them while also educating visitors about Florida wildlife.

There is also a rotating Guest Animal exhibit. During our most recent visit we even saw a pair of playful dingoes.

Nature Trails and Scenic Walks 

If you enjoy being outdoors, you will love the nature trails around the museum property.

A half mile Nature Trail loop winds through trees and along the lake, offering a peaceful break from the busier parts of the museum. Along the way you might see turtles, birds, wildflowers, and native plants.

Do not miss the nearby McGowan Butterfly Garden, which adds another colorful stop to your walk through the grounds.

Jim Gary’s Twentieth Century Dinosaurs

One of the most unique exhibits at the Tallahassee Museum is the collection of dinosaur sculptures created by artist Jim Gary.

These massive dinosaurs are made from recycled automobile parts that have been transformed into impressive prehistoric creatures. Some stretch more than 40 feet long and weigh several thousand pounds.

They are scattered throughout the museum grounds and are always a fun surprise to come across while exploring.

Eat at Trail Break Cafe

If you need a break during your visit, Trail Break Cafe is located inside the museum and offers a variety of casual options.

The updated menu includes sandwiches, wraps, burgers, and salads. On weekends they even serve mimosas, which is a fun little bonus for the adults.

It is a great place to cool off, relax, and refuel before heading back out to explore.

Tallahassee Museum Tree to Tree Adventure

For visitors who want something a little more adventurous, the Tallahassee Museum Tree to Tree Adventure is easily one of the most exciting experiences in the city.

This obstacle course in the trees includes suspended bridges, ropes, climbing challenges, and zip lines high above the forest floor.

There are three different courses available depending on age and comfort level:

• Treemendous Adventures: Designed for younger participants between 41 and 60 inches tall.
• Canopy Crossing: The most popular course and the one we tried during our visit. It includes 14 obstacles, 25 platforms, and 7 zip lines.
• Soaring Cypress: The most advanced option with longer and more challenging elements.

Before starting the course, everyone participates in a safety demonstration where guides explain how the equipment works and how to use the belay system. Once you begin, the course is self guided while staff members monitor from the ground.

Each course takes a different amount of time to complete.

Treemendous Adventures usually takes about 45 minutes.
Canopy Crossing takes about 45 to 90 minutes.
Soaring Cypress can take 90 minutes or more depending on how busy the course is.

If you are afraid of heights, this may not be your favorite activity. But if you enjoy a challenge, the Tallahassee Museum zip line course is an unforgettable experience.

One tip from personal experience. This activity is much more enjoyable during cooler months since it can be physically demanding.

Tips for Visiting the Tallahassee Museum

• Be comfortable! The Tallahassee Museum is mostly outdoors, so be sure to dress for the weather during your visit. Wear comfortable shoes that you’ll be able to easily walk in while exploring the 52 acres of the museum.
• Florida sunshine can be strong, especially in the summer months. Bringing sunscreen, a hat, and even a portable fan can make a big difference.
• Plan to spend at least three to four hours here, especially if you want to experience the Tree to Tree Adventures course.
• When you arrive, grab a map and check the schedule for daily activities like animal encounters or feeding demonstrations so you do not miss anything.
